NYC WATERY GRAVES

A New York Historical Society Point of Interest

The waters of New York Harbor adjacent to this shore have been deemed a historically significant site and represent an interesting chapter in the annals of American organized crime. Gangsters from Dutch Schultz to Charles "Lucky" Luciano disposed of dozens of their adversaries here, often having fitted them with "cement shoes".  Following the November 1963 giant octopus attack on the Staten Island Ferry, search and recovery divers unwittingly discovered the final resting place of at least 30 victims of the New York syndicate, many perfectly preserved in the cold and polluted water. The figure depicted here is a likeness of the body of Bo Weinberg, a Schultz lieutenant made to disappear after the Schulz and Luciano factions went to war.
